Fremont Community Releases Update Regarding COVID-19

City of Fremont, Fremont Public Schools, Midland University, Archbishop Bergan Catholic Schools, Trinity Lutheran School, Metropolitan Community College, Fremont Family YMCA, Three Rivers Public Health Department, Methodist Fremont Health, Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce & Dodge County

Fremont, Neb. – (Mar. 26, 2021) Recently, representatives from the City of Fremont, Three Rivers Public Health Department, Methodist Fremont Health, Fremont Public Schools, Midland University, Archbishop Bergan Catholic Schools, Trinity Lutheran School, Metropolitan Community College, Fremont Family YMCA, Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce and Dodge County met to share updates and to discuss the local response to COVID-19.

Mayor Joey Spellerberg opened the meeting by thanking the community partners, local businesses, and all of Fremont for their efforts in minimizing the effects of the COVID-19 virus. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, including abiding by the Board of Health’s mask mandate, many lives were spared from the deadly virus. He reminded everyone that the current Directed Health Measure that requires the wearing of face coverings expires on March 31, 2021, at midnight. He said, “citizens should not view the expiration of the mask mandate as a sign that the threat of COVID-19 no longer exists, but rather it is an opportunity for the community to demonstrate our ability to act responsibly and to continue to protect ourselves and others from this deadly virus. I will continue to work with Three Rivers Health Department (Three Rivers) to monitor the spread of virus and if the risk dial begins to trend upward or if a surge develops in our community, I will work with Three Rivers Board and the Fremont Board of Health to take the necessary steps to curb the surge. I am proud of the efforts Fremont and the surrounding communities have made to control the virus and now, with an increase in vaccines available, our job should be to educate and encourage everyone to get vaccinated. Only then, can we truly defeat the COVID-19 virus.”

The following entities are providing an update regarding the status of current prevention measures as well as the announcements of availability of facilities, events, and activities in Fremont.

Fremont Public Schools Announces Calendar Change

Fremont, Neb. – (Mar. 8, 2020) Fremont Public Schools is announcing that the 2020-2021 school year will end early on Monday, May 17 – three days early. Dismissal times will be the same as previously scheduled on May 20.

FPS has been working with the Nebraska Department of Education very closely throughout all the changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The Framework developed by NDE is going to help districts guide their work to be able to accelerate learning for all our students as we move into summer programming for 2021, the school year 2021-2022, and the school year 2022-2023.

Kate Heineman, executive director of teaching and learning stated, “The scope of this work is lengthy and requires all teachers in all content areas to accomplish.  We are very proud of our teachers and staff in all that they have done to keep all of our students learning whether in person or virtually.”

President of the Board of Education, Sandi Proskovec shared, “Our staff has put forth an outstanding effort this school year. This framework requires time and we want to be supportive in providing our staff the ability to accomplish it for the future success of our students.”

Teachers will go through all of the curriculum, identify the essential learnings and review the past 15 months of work to identify gaps that will need to be addressed.  The nature of education is that current learning draws on past learnings and experiences – when those have not been met it becomes extremely difficult to continue to move forward.

“NDE has provided local school districts with flexibility in meeting the requirements outlined in State rules and regulations – this flexibility will allow Fremont Public Schools to be better prepared to meet the needs of our students,” stated Mark Shepard, superintendent of schools.
