Fremont High School Celebrates Fall and Winter Athletic Medalists

 

Fremont, Neb. – (Feb. 24, 2021) Fremont High School is proud to announce the recognition of the fall and winter state championship medalists in athletics. The athletes were honored on Friday, February 19 for their accomplishments. 

 

Scott Anderson, activities director at FHS said, “Congratulations to these students and coaches on a successful season! In a year that has been filled with challenges, they have once again risen to the occasion to become the best in the State of Nebraska!”

 

Boys Cross Country 

Fremont’s boys cross country team won the State Championship in October with a final score of 58 points.  That score defeated previous #1 ranked Millard West by 20, and #2 ranked Lincoln Northstar by 73.  Earning medals for the Tigers were senior Owen Wagner in 9th, junior Nolan Miller in 10th, and junior Carter Waters in 13th.  Finishing out the top 5 scoring for the Tigers were junior Braden Taylor and senior Zac McGeorge who were able to defeat every other teams 3rd best runner to help give the Tigers their low finishing score. Junior Aaron Ladd and Junior Tyson Baker finished as the Tigers 6th and 7th runners on the day. The team is coached by Sean McMahon, Beth McMahon and Alex Way.

 

Girls Cross Country

The 2020 Fremont Girls cross country team was on the podium for the third straight year this fall, finishing the Class A Team State Runner-Up team after winning the HAC (conference) championship and their fourth straight district championship.  At the state meet, the Tigers were led by two state medalists: senior Shelby Bracker, who saved her best for last in her career finishing in 8th place, and junior Elli Dahl, was 11th in just her fourth race of the year after being injured for most of the season.  Freshman Maris Dahl (23rd), Junior Lucy Dillon (24th) and Senior Mara Hemmer (25th) were the other scorers for the Tigers. Junior Mia Wagner and Senior Emily Nau also competed for the Tigers.  The girls team is coached by Jake Smrcina, Heidi Anderson and Sidney Hirsch.

 

Girls Wrestling

Senior Madison Martinez finished as a state runner-up at her respective weight class. Madison was also a state champion during her junior year. Eny Bravo, junior, finished in 6th place at her respective weight class. The girls wrestling team finished in 10th place out of 64 teams. 

 

Boys Wrestling 

Senior Garret Moser placed 5th at 220. Garret finishes his wrestling career as a 2X state medalist and a 3X state qualifier. Senior Tommy Wentz placed 4th at 160. Tommy finishes his high school career as 3X state qualifier and he is second all time in FHS history in career wins with 133. Sophomore Benny Alfaro placed 5th at 195. Benny is a 2X state qualifier. 

Wrestling coaches are Ben Wilcox, Dillon Grossman, Nick Howell, Cooper Self and Kim Harrill.

 

Boys Tennis

The 2020 Boys Tennis team finished in 10th place (out of 24 teams) at this year’s State Championships.  Senior Alex Bigsby, finished as the state runner-up at #1 singles, earning Fremont’s best individual finish at State since 2002. The team is coached by Justin Bigsby and Carly Gross.

 

“We are very proud of our athletes and celebrate the opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and talents. We will miss our seniors and the leadership they have brought to their respective teams, but look forward to seeing the talents of our freshmen, sophomores and juniors develop,” said Heidi Moran, assistant activities director at FHS.
