Fremont and Bergan High School Baseball Co-op

Team transitions to FPS

Fremont, Neb. – (Feb. 3, 2022) Fremont Public Schools and Archbishop Bergan Catholic announced this week that the Bergan Baseball team will transition to the Fremont Tigers Baseball team this spring. FPS and Bergan have had a co-op baseball team here in Fremont since 1997. The team has won two district championships under the direction of Jeff Hayden who has been the head coach since 2013.

Members of both Fremont Public Schools and the Bergan Administration have made the decision and approved the co-op baseball team change to happen spring of 2022.  Chris Rainforth, Athletic Director for Bergan, says this change was made in looking at what is best for the program moving forward.  “We are excited that the head coach Jeff Hayden will continue to lead the baseball team, and the tradition of great baseball will continue here for the Fremont community. For both Bergan and Fremont this made sense because our other co-op opportunities are managed under the FPS activities department.”

The first day of practice for boys baseball will be Monday, February 28. The first game will be Friday, March 18 at 5:00 pm at Roncalli Catholic. “We are thrilled to continue this partnership with Bergan and welcome them to Tiger Nation,” stated Scott Anderson, FHS Activities Director.

Chris Rainforth added “We currently offer co-op opportunities for men’s and women’s swim team, women’s wrestling, softball, men’s and women’s bowling, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis.  The partnership has been great and allowed our students’ opportunities they may not otherwise have. We are excited about this transition and to continue to support the One Town One Team mission.”

Fremont Public Schools Announcing Updated Protocol

COVID-19 Protocol

Fremont, Neb. – (Jan. 26, 2022) Today Fremont Public Schools is announcing changes to their COVID-19 protocols. The District will move back to a mask choice/mask recommended policy.  The changes are in response to the decreased number of individuals who have recently contracted the virus and the continued emphasis the District has placed on keeping our students and staff safe and in school.

“From the beginning of the pandemic we have utilized our own District numbers to make decisions – several weeks ago the numbers were trending in the wrong direction and rapidly increasing. When the mask requirement was put in place we stated that when the trend reverses we would reconsider, that’s where our data is leading us,” said Mark Shepard, superintendent.

The outlined changes which are slated to begin, tomorrow, January 27 are as follows:

 Social distancing

  • Breakfast / Lunch: Implement protocols to achieve social distance.
  • Entry into buildings: Temperatures will be taken upon arrival at the beginning of the school day and for entry/access to all FPS facilities including for extracurricular activities.
  • Classroom spacing:  Classrooms will be arranged in a fashion that allows for maximum spacing between desks/tables with desks all facing the same direction when possible.
  • Activities:  We encourage fans to sit in pods (family members and those with whom they otherwise socialize with).

Transportation

  • Students and staff will be required to wear masks while riding on district-owned/leased/chartered buses.  Buses will be disinfected at the conclusion of routes.

Daily Temperature Screening

  • Temperatures will be screened at all sites for anyone entering the facility.
  • Individuals with a temperature above 100.0°F will not be permitted in the facility.
  • Temperatures will be screened at all activity / athletic events.

PPE and Cleaning

  • The District and contracted cleaning services will increase the intensity of cleaning services and continue the daily use of electrostatic charged spraying equipment.
  • Hand sanitizer will be readily available and its use is strongly encouraged.
  • Masks will no longer be required, but are strongly recommended.

Field Trips

  • Field trips will be limited and only approved after careful consideration by district administration.

Outside Visitors

  • Schools will be closed to outside visitors during the school day – exceptions will be made for curriculum-based presenters/volunteers.  Outside visitors during the school day are required to wear masks while in the building.

Vaccine Clinics

  • The District will continue to work with 3Rivers on providing opportunities for staff and students (with parent permission).

Close Contact Exposures / Household Contact Exposures

  • Positive individuals must quarantine for 5 days, if returning for days 6-10 a mask is required.
  • If unvaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, quarantine for 5-10 days, if returning for days 6-10 a mask is required.
  • If vaccinated and exposed to COVID-19, wear a mask for 10 days or stay home for 10 days.

EPI-Links

  • EPI-Links are defined as three or more positive cases within a cohort group  (classroom, sports team, activity, club, etc.) in close contact.
  • Masks may be required for the cohort for a specified period of time.
  • Quarantine or masking is required for close contacts.

“During the first semester, we know these advanced protocols worked to mitigate the spread of the virus. As we move past the Omicron variant we are still going to see positive COVID cases and other seasonal illnesses such as colds and influenza. Please stay home if you are sick, stay home if you have not been fever-free for 24 hours without medication and stay home if you have been tested for COVID-19 and have not received your test results,” Mark Shepard concluded.

FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETE NAMED GATORADE NEBRASKA GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CHICAGO (January 24, 2022) — In its 37th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade today announced Elli Dahl of Fremont High School is the 2021-22 Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Player of the Year. Dahl is the first Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Player of the Year to be chosen from Fremont High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Dahl as Nebraska’s best high school girls cross country player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year award to be announced in February, Dahl joins an elite alumni association of state award- winners in 12 sports, including Lukas Verzbicas (2010-11 & 2009-10, Carl Sandburg High School, Orland Park, Ill.), Megan Goethals (2009-10, Rochester High School, Rochester Hills, Mich.), Jordan Hasay (2008-09, Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School, San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Chris Derrick (2007-08, Neuqua Valley High School, Naperville, Ill.).

The 5-foot-1 senior won the Division A state meet this past season with a time of 17:58.0, breaking the tape 29.5 seconds ahead of her next-closest competitor and leading the Tigers to a second-place finish as a team. Dahl’s championship clocking set a state record as she became the first Nebraska girl to break 18 minutes in a five- kilometer race. She also crossed the line in 20th at the Eastbay Midwest Regional Championships and finished 36th at the Nike Cross Heartland Regional Championships.

Dahl has volunteered locally with the Salvation Army and as a youth track instructor. “Elli is a fantastic runner,” said Theresa Gosnell, head coach of Westside High School. “Her traits that stand out to me are her amazing speed and great strategy when running and winning her races.”

Dahl has maintained a weighted 4.29 GPA in the classroom. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to run on scholarship at the University of Nebraska this fall.

“Elli’s impact on our team and culture has been undeniable-in her four years of cross country, she is one of the hardest workers and most dependable kids on our team, and in our school,” stated Jake Smrcina, FHS girls cross country head coach.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.

Dahl joins recent Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Players of the Year Stella Miner (2020-21, Marian High School), Berlyn Schutz (2019-20, Lincoln East High School), Kaylie Crews (2018-19, Papillion-La Vista South High School) and Gabby McGinn (2017-18, Millard West High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.

Gatorade has a long-standing history of serving athlete communities and understands how sports instill valuable lifelong skills on and off the field. Through Gatorade’s “Play it Forward” platform, Dahl has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national organization of their choosing that helps young athletes realize the benefits of playing sports. Dahl is also eligible to submit a short video explaining why the organization they chose is deserving of one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants, which will be announced throughout the year. To date, Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have totaled more than $3.5 million across more than 1,300 organizations.

Since the program’s inception in 1985, Gatorade Player of the Year award recipients have won hundreds of professional and college championships, and many have also turned into pillars in their communities, becoming coaches, business owners and educators.

Fremont, Neb. – (Jan. 14, 2022) Yesterday, representatives from the City of Fremont, Three Rivers Public Health Department, Methodist Fremont Health, Fremont Public Schools, Midland University, Archbishop Bergan Catholic School, Trinity Lutheran School, Metropolitan Community College, Fremont Family YMCA, Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce, Senator Lynne Walz and Dodge County met to share updates and to discuss the local response to COVID-19 and the COVID Omicron Variant.

Mayor Spellerberg opened the meeting by thanking all area partners for their tireless efforts and teamwork as we continue to fight the spread of Covid-19 and the new Omicron variant.  “Since our first confirmed community case in March of 2020, our community came together with a focused plan to slow the spread of the virus, keep schools and businesses open, and vaccinate Fremonters.  I want to thank the members of our community for following protocols set in place by area schools, businesses, and other organizations as we slow the spread of the current Omicron variant.  COVID-19 and its current variants are not going away-so a vaccination and booster shot continue to be the greatest weapon we have to prevent serious illness and hospitalization.

“Terra Uhing and her team at the Three Rivers Health Department is doing a great job of keeping Fremont and the three Counties in its jurisdiction up to date with the latest information on the virus and new Omicron variant. The City and our community partners will continue to work with Three Rivers to focus on education and encouraging people to get vaccinated.  As our community and hospital system are seeing a strong uptick in cases with the Omicron variant, please take necessary precautions to protect others and slow the spread.  Monitor your symptoms, stay home when you are sick, and please take steps recommended by our health department.  The path to a future without fear from the effects of COVID-19 and its variants is in the hands of the people and I am optimistic that they will continue to get vaccinated, boosted, and take the steps necessary, to protect themselves, their family and friends, and the general public,” concluded Spellerberg.

Three Rivers Public Health is offering free community testing in conjunction with Total Wellness.  Testing will be Tuesdays 8:30 am – 3:00 pm, Thursdays 8:30 am – 12:00 pm and Fridays 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
