Fremont High School Students Compete at Inaugural Invitational

8 Welding Students Compete at Metropolitan Community College

Fremont, Neb. – (Feb. 11, 2019) Eight Fremont High School SkillsUSA welding students recently competed in the Inaugural Metro Omaha Trades Invitational at the Fort Omaha Campus. The competition was held on Saturday, February 2 and consisted of written and physical tests for students in Gas Metal Arc Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and Oxyfuel Cutting to demonstrate their mastery of the subject. Fremont represented well by placing three of the top five welders and five of the top ten.

Results from the High School Welding Competition:

1st Place: Devin Roschewski

2nd Place: Zach Strobel

Ivan Esparza, Austyn Gard and Quentin Cisler finished in the top 10.

“The hard work that these students put in has been rewarded. I could not be prouder of the work ethic of these students and the drive to prepare themselves for the careers that are ahead of them,” said Brad Ryun, Fremont High School Welding Academy teacher. All participating students are current or former members of the MCC/FHS Welding Academy under the instruction of Ryun and Rob Hocking (Metropolitan Community College). After the competition Ryun and Hocking noted seeing the pride students had on their faces when walking out of the welding shop. “They knew that they were winners, regardless of the results, and we felt so too.”

Every Tuesday Grant Elementary students get one-on-one time with Midland University students. Teachers choose a variety of students and send them to a resource room with work to complete. Students then get one-on-one time with students in Theresa Ferg’s Technology Methods and Materials class at Midland University. Ferg says, “It’s great for my students because they don’t want to always sit in class. With this partnership they are taking strategies they learn in class and putting them to a practical application.” Students in Ferg’s class are sophomores and juniors, preparing to student teach in a few short semesters. Students in Ferg’s class are all Elementary Education majors with a K-6 Special Education endorsement. Grant students benefit from this time because of the individualized attention they receive.

The 100th day of school is always a momentous occasion. Our elementary students and teachers made the day memorable by celebrating being 100 days smarter! Some of the activities included writing 100 words in English or Spanish, building towers with 100 cups, building structures with 100 legos, dressing like you are 100 years old and many more!

Fremont High School is unlike many high schools in that we offer John Baylor ACT Prep to all of our juniors for free! We are so thankful to have such great community partners like Bank of the West who make donations and allow us to provide this great service for our students. We also couldn’t accept donations like this without the help from the Fremont Public Schools Foundation.

Mark Williams, director of guidance at Fremont High School, says, “John Baylor has life-changing consequences for our students. The community support we see in Fremont speaks volumes about how great our community members are.”

Thank you Bank of the West!

For the second year in a row, first-graders at Fremont Public Schools’ elementary school buildings will take swim lessons at the Fremont Family YMCA’s Dillon Family Aquatics Center as part of their physical education curriculum.

The program gives kids an opportunity to learn a new skill — one that can be valuable in a community like Fremont, said Brad Dahl, executive director of student services and business affairs for Fremont Public Schools.

“When you look at our community, obviously, there’s a lot of opportunity to interact with water,” Dahl said. “We’ve got Fremont Lakes and that great resource, and then multiple lakes all the way around, along with rivers and creeks. So exposure is real, and it’s just one of those life lessons that can help provide some safety, yet allow people to enjoy those great resources that are around us locally.”

Several Fremont High School students were recently awarded by the Nebraska Education Technology Association for their graphic design work.

The students participated in an annual contest offered in the spring for K-12 students in the Midwest Region. Categories of the contest include Digital Images, Interactive Media, Video, Audio and Infographics.

The three students — Eduardo Parra, Oscar Avila, and Taylor Ladd — took the top three spots respectively for their work creating infographics focused on social issues like texting and driving and cigarette smoking/vaping.

The students completed their infographics as part of a Graphic Design II class taught by Kristen Strickler.

Recently, Mrs. Herrick’s reading class had a “book tasting” where students had the opportunity to sample several different titles. Rotating through four different tables, readers enjoyed light snacks and thoughtful discussions about their favorite books!

This week, each of Fremont Public Schools elementary buildings received a visit from magician Jeff Quinn.

But Quinn’s performances didn’t just give kids the opportunity to be mystified. His show centers around the idea of “kindness,” and aims to help teach kids to be kind to one another, says Bell Field Elementary School Counselor Ainslee Kroenke.

“Really the reason we wanted to do it is because kindness and empathy and treating each other well is really a big thing that we’re always focusing on and teaching the kids,” Kroenke said. “Anytime that we have an opportunity to teach them and reinforce that, host things with fun involved too, we just really enjoy being able to do that for them.”
