MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports, is an educational framework that promotes the academic and behavioral success of all students in a school or district. It is designed to provide a comprehensive and integrated system of support that addresses the diverse needs of students at different levels.

MTSS is based on the principles of prevention, early intervention, and data-driven decision-making. It involves a tiered approach, where instruction and interventions are provided at different levels of intensity based on student needs. The three tiers typically include:

  1. Tier 1 (Universal Level): This tier includes strategies and practices that are implemented for all students in the general education setting. It focuses on providing high-quality, evidence-based instruction and support to promote academic achievement and positive behavior for all students.
  1. Tier 2 (Targeted Level): Students who require additional support beyond the universal level receive targeted interventions in small groups. These interventions are more specific and intensive, targeting the specific needs of students who are struggling academically or behaviorally, and are provided in addition to Tier 1 instruction and support.
  1. Tier 3 (Intensive Level): At this level, if students need additional support, they may be nominated for an individualized Tier 3 intervention. These interventions are very individualized, comprehensive, tailored to meet the students specific needs and typically involve collaboration with specialized professionals, such as special education teachers or related service providers, as part of the students action team.

MTSS emphasizes the use of data to guide decision-making. Ongoing assessment and progress monitoring help identify students who may need additional support and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. This data-driven approach enables educators to make informed decisions about instruction, intervention strategies, and resource allocation.

The ultimate goal of MTSS is to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that maximizes student success. By providing a systematic framework for identifying and addressing student needs, MTSS helps schools and districts promote positive outcomes for all students, regardless of their academic or behavioral challenges.
